Inspired by the popular series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr., Kansas City PBS has partnered with the Midwest Genealogy Center to offer an exclusive opportunity to help you explore incomplete and unknown narratives of your family history with a genealogy librarian of the Midwest Genealogy Center. In this 2-hour consultation, you are encouraged to bring your questions, photos, heirlooms and oral histories to start or continue your ancestral journey.

Consultation details:

  • Consultation appointments available starting April 1 – Nov. 1, 2018
  • Up two (2) persons allowed to attend consultation
  • Consultation length: Two (2) hours
  • No items are required in advance of consultation; items and questions should be ready at the time of consultation

Inspired by our recent series, Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics, we here at Kansas City PBS searched for quilt collections — in their varied techniques, narratives and beauty — to share with you. We found it at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Join us for a special opportunity to view a world-class textile collection, which currently features the exhibit, Uncovered: The Ken Burns Collection. The museum also boasts three carefully curated exhibition galleries and state-of-the-art storage for quilt textiles. We’ll enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum’s textile collection and its preservation methods.

Prolific film-maker and documentarian Ken Burns loves antique American quilts. Displayed alongside eloquent, anecdotal thoughts about quilts, collecting, art and authenticity, Burns’ quilts function as his films do: they spark dialogue and remind us—he hopes—of our shared humanity.

Current exhibitions tour with IQSCM docent

Behind the Scenes tour led by an IQSCM professional staff member. Includes viewing of at least six special pieces displayed in the collections workroom and/or collections storage area, a brief presentation about how we care for our collection and questions and answers with the staff member.

Beginning Genealogy
Find out the fundamentals of beginning your genealogical research project. We will discuss organization, census information, vital records, and where to look for information. This is a beginner-level class.

Census Records Research
The U.S. Federal Census is a great place to start tracing your ancestors. The first Federal Population Census was taken in 1790, and a census has been taken every 10 years since that date. Learn what census years are available, what information they contain, and how to access them. One will also learn what different information was included on each federal census and how to access that information. This is a beginner-level class.

Newspaper Databases at Mid-Continent Public Library
Newspaper databases can be used to find genealogical information such as birth, marriage and death records, obituaries, probate cases, and interesting information about your ancestors’ lives. Learn about the different online newspaper databases accessible through MCPL.

Hidden Treasures at MGC
Unlock MGC’s many treasures with a tour of the Library’s little-known resources. This is an intermediate-level class.

This adventure promises to educate, fascinate and excite imaginations of every age, including the history buffs, armchair explorers, and outdoor enthusiasts among us!

Engage in a behind-the-scenes conversation with Kliff Kuehl (KCPT) and George Guastello (Union Station) about the creation of Dinosaurs Revealed, interact with 3D science exhibits, and learn what it takes to reveal and recover fossilized remains from 252 million years ago found in North America. Recommended for ages 12 years and older.

Dr. David A. Burnham is a paleontologist at KU’s Biodiversity Institute and specializes in dinosaur research and public outreach. He has traveled around the globe documenting the natural history of dinosaurs and has published extensively on raptors and T. rex. Currently, his lab at the KU Natural History Museum is working on a T. rex and this summer’s fieldwork will continue the excavation in Montana.
