Using Blocks in the Classroom for Early Childhood Providers @ KCPT Public Television
Mar 12 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Using Blocks in the Classroom for Early Childhood Providers @ KCPT Public Television | Kansas City | Missouri | United States

Blocks are universal play materials, they are found in preschool classrooms around the globe. There is a great deal of research documenting the benefits of playing with blocks; consistently showing that block play supports the development of mathematical thinking, social skills, abstract thinking, creativity, and most recently literacy.  However, despite this evidence, block play remains largely a limited “choice” activity.  This session will explore what is learned when children play in the block area, what should or might be included and the 10 things NAEYC says that children learn from block play.

Presenter:  Nancy Heathman, Early Education and Professional Development Specialist – The Family Conservancy

Support provided by the Francis Family Foundation.

Participants will earn two clock hours and a light meal will be provided.

CANCELED: Diabetes in KC Town Hall Screening and Panel Discussion @ Plexpod Westport Commons | Medallion Theater | Kansas City | Missouri | United States

The safety of our staff and our community is our top priority. In order to minimize the spread of COVID-19 we have reviewed our upcoming events schedule and in light of the recent ban, by the Mayor’s office, on large-scale events in Kansas City, we have decided to cancel Diabetes in KC Town Hall scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, at 6 p.m.

Our intention is to continue to serve our audiences and partners with minimal disruption. Please continue to watch kcpt.org/events, our social media channels and our email communications for additional updates.

Millions of us live with a silent killer. It’s called diabetes. It claims more lives than cancer and HIV combined. It’s now predicted that one in three children born since 2000 will develop the disease. Blood Sugar Rising puts human faces to these statistics, exploring the history and science of the illness.

Be the first to watch extended excerpts from this timely and comprehensive film, coming to KCPT this April. The documentary reveals new hopes, from the rise of safer and easier medical treatments to new discoveries about lifestyle and environmental factors. Blood Sugar Rising also reports on those taking action to improve diabetes management and prevention.

Immediately following the screening, KCPT’s Nick Haines explores the impact of diabetes in Kansas City with experts on the frontlines of tackling this chronic health condition.

This program is a partnership between KCPT and Health Forward Foundation.

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Ken Burns trains his camera lens on the greatest detective story ever told: The quest to decipher the master code of instructions that makes and defines humans. Be among the first to see extended excerpts of Burns’ upcoming four-hour documentary, The Gene: An Intimate History, coming to Kansas City PBS this April.

The film follows the identification of the first genes that cause human illnesses like cancer and Cystic Fibrosis through to stunning breakthroughs that are changing our understanding of how genes impact heredity, disease and behavior.

Immediately following the screening, KCPT’s Nick Haines facilitates a local conversation about who benefits and who is left behind by genetic research with ethicists, researchers, medical students, patients and the community. This Town Hall conversation will be recorded and broadcast around Ken Burns’ “The Gene” on KCPT.

The Gene: A KC Town Hall is a partnership between KCPT, The Center for Practical Bioethics and Kansas City University.
