Independent Lens 'The Bad Kids' Workshop | August 17 @ KCPT Public Television | Kansas City | Missouri | United States

KCPT Presents: Independent Lens Documentary The Bad Kids

A Workshop With Judi Simmons Estes, Ph.D, Park University

Are you an education professional who works with students at risk of dropping out of high school? KCPT wants to arm you with the resources to help get them to graduation.

During this free workshop, you’ll explore the Independent Lens Documentary The Bad Kids and learn about California’s Black Rock Continuation High School, an alternative school for at-risk students, and how the mission is to help those students realize their potential. Located in an impoverished community in the Mohave Desert, Black Rock’s foundation is based upon empathy, commitment, positive reinforcement, integrity and self-care. Teachers at Black Rock maintain a high level of personal and emotional involvement by supporting one another in many capacities. Learn how you can incorporate these same principles into your everyday work with students.

You’ll receive The Bad Kids Educator Toolkit adaptable to both school-based student learning and district-wide professional development opportunities whose focus is strengthening and supporting at-risk students.

Seating is limited. A light dinner will be provided.

Dr. Estes has a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in education and a Master’s degree in Psychology: Mental Health Services as well as a Ph.D. in Behavioral Psychology. Dr. Estes has Missouri teaching certification for learning disabilities and behavior disorders and has had experiences with adolescents who are at risk for dropping out of school. Currently, Dr. Estes is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean in the School of Education at Park University.

Join KCPT and 909 The Bridge at booth #52, where we will be handing out eclipse glasses.*

Our glasses meet the ISO 12312-2:2015 standard for safe eclipse viewing. Due to a backlog with certification labs, the glasses were not able to be printed with the ISO compliancy statement at the time of manufacture in April 2017. The manufacturer’s test sample passed compliancy with ICS Inc. Laboratories on August 17, 2017. We feel confident in the glasses we’re distributing, but caution users to comply with the best practices for safe use:

  • Always inspect your solar filter before use; if scratched or damaged, discard it.
  • Always supervise children using solar filters.
  • Stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer before looking up at the bright sun.
  • After looking at the sun, turn away and remove your filter — do not remove it while looking at the sun.

Asleep At The Wheel @ Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College
Sep 30 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Asleep At The Wheel @ Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College | Overland Park | Kansas | United States

Join KCPT for a night with Asleep at the Wheel and Hot Club of Cowtown live at JCCC’s Carlsen Center!

Both musical groups will highlight JCCC Performing Arts Series’ 2017 Kansas Cowboy Jubilee on Saturday, September 30th with their unique showcases of the sound of Western swing.

In reviving the freewheeling, eclectic sensibility of Western swing godfather Bob Wills, Asleep at the Wheel have earned enthusiastic critical praise; they have only preserved classic sounds that had all but disappeared from country music.

Since its beginnings in the late 1990s, the Hot Club of Cowtown’s star has continued to rise as its reputation for jaw-dropping virtuosity and unforgettable live shows has become the band’s global brand. Inspired by the sound and style of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, Hot Club of Cowtown’s live repertoire has expanded to include a substantial amount of original material and cover songs from artists like Tom Waits.
